Speaker Profile

Joanna Murray-Smith is an alumni of Columbia University's Creative Writing graduate course in New York and is a former Vice Chancellor's Fellow at Melbourne University. She has been a guest writing teacher at Melbourne University, the Victorian College of the Arts and UCLA in the USA.

She is best known for her plays that are staged around the world and have been performed by some of the world's greatest practitioners including: Annette Bening, Meryl Steep, Laura Linney, Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Diana Rigg, Corin Redgrave, Sam Waterston, Iain Glen and John Slattery.

Her plays have been presented on the West End numerous times and on Broadway and are regularly programmed in all Australian state theatre company seasons and Los Angeles' Geffen Playhouse.

Her latest play, a drama about guns in America, American Song, has just completed an acclaimed world season premiere at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre which commissioned it.

Her novels include Truce, Judgement Rock and Sunnyside (all published by Penguin). Her screen work includes the ABC TV legal drama Janus and the recently broadcast made for TV opera, The Divorce.  

She is currently working on a new feature film produced by Bryan Brown. Her opera librettos commissioned by Opera Australia include The Divorce and Love in the Age of Therapy.
