During this 4 hour practical Masterclass, Peter Farnan will address:

-How to make a song and crystallise a central idea

-Explain why some songs are memorable while other songs just float away

-Teach how to create a song one that is replete with detail and how to balance whimsy, eccentricity and non-conformity with convention and structure

-Demonstrate the creation of a song from basic building blocks and explore how lyric, melody, harmony, texture, groove - can be focussed to highlight a song’s central idea

-Provide writing exercises and tips for generating lyrical material

-Provide strategies for expanding your use of chords

-Give feedback on your song or songs including adding detail and musical emphasis to your lyrics

-Provide the principles, techniques and tips to apply to your craft

Speaker Profile

Peter Farnan is one of the leaders of Australian rock and pop music as a musician, performer, songwriter and producer. As founding member of Boom Crash Opera he wrote the hit songs Great Wall, Dancing In The Storm, Hands Up In The Air, Get Out Of The House, Bettadaze, In The Morning and more.


He has produced records and/ or worked with leading Australian artists and is about to release a new album of his own songs, Pesky Bones, sung by Paul Kelly, Rebecca Barnard, Deborah Conway, Tim Rodgers and more.


In addition to performing, songwriting and producing recordings for other artists and bands, Peter Farnan has a research Masters in popular song structuring.
