WORKSHOP 1: Daily Review On-Camera Audition Workshop with Welker White and Damian Young ¹

This workshop is devised for working actors or those just dipping their toe into the world of film and television.


‘House of Cards’ regular Damian Young and Welker White have featured in over 100 US film and TV shows in their 30-year career in screen and theatre acting, directing and teaching living in New York.


In this 2.5 hour workshop, a maximum of 10 participants will work with Damian and Welker (an adjunct acting professor at Brooklyn College) to unlock the secrets and conquer the fears of the on-screen audition. (The workshop is not open to observers).


Participants will work on simulated auditions on-camera, with film or TV scripts made available in the week prior to the workshop.


Through active participation actors will come away with new confidence to help them navigate the audition experience.

The workshop aims to teach participants:
• getting off the page
• bringing your authentic self into the room
• creating a world and living in it
• overcoming nerves
• remaining open, alert, and ready


Places are strictly limited to 10 to ensure maximum time with Damian and Welker. The class is not open to observers or auditors.

‘House of Cards’ regular Damian Young and Welker White have featured in over 100 US film and TV shows in their 30-year career in screen and theatre acting, directing and teaching in New York.


In this 3.5 hour workshop, a maximum of 8 participants only will work with Damian and Welker (an adjunct acting professor at Brooklyn College), this three-hour closed workshop (limited to 8 participants) aims to expand the actor’s range of expressiveness and ease working in front of a camera.


Coming Alive is an investigation into the working world of film and television and learning to make necessary adjustments in acting technique to suit both the constraints as well as possibilities in filmed performance. The workshop will demystify the technical obstacles that get in the way of delivering a compelling filmed performance.


Each actor will have an opportunity to work on-camera in a close-up or medium shot with Welker or Damian off-camera, as well as receive feedback and adjustments. Participants will be given selected TV or film scripts prior to the workshop.


Workshop Goals:

living vs. acting
• translating common directions
• how to prepare with no rehearsal
• personalising the material
• acting off the lines, when to throw away language
• gain a working knowledge of film jargon


Places are strictly limited to 8 participants to ensure maximum time with Damian and Welker. The class is not open to observers or auditors to allow for up-close and intimate tuition with two of the leaders in their field.


About Damian Young and Welker White...


Damian Young is one of the most sought-after character actors working in US television today. Damian is known for his early work in the films of Hal Hartley (Amateur, Simple Men), and has gone on to work as a regular or supporting character on numerous television shows: Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Damages on Amazon, USA’s The War Next Door, Showtime’s Californication, HBO’s The Comeback as well as recurring and guest roles on shows such as The Good Wife, Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter, Blacklist, White Collar, Person Of Interest, Sex and the City, Numb3rs, Third Watch, CSI: Miami, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Law and Order, and many others. Upcoming films include Catfight, We Only Know So Much, and Todd Haynes’ (Carol, Far From Heaven) film Wonderstruck alongside Julianne Moore. Damian currently stars as Aiden MacCallen on the Netflix series House of Cards.


Welker White is an adjunct professor at Brooklyn College, where she teaches a range of acting classes, including The Art and Craft of Acting in Film and Television for MFA acting candidates and The Audition. Welker also teaches privately, most recently bringing her on-camera teaching to the esteemed NYU Graduate Acting program to help inaugurate their new Film/TV acting initiative. As an actor Welker is well-known for originating roles by major playwrights Lisa Kron, John Patrick Shanley, Craig Lucas, Mac Wellman, Howard Korder, David Ives, Amy Freed, Joanna Murray-Smith and many others. Her film work includes roles in GoodFellas, Dead Poet’s Society, This Is My Life, Eat Pray Love, Morning Glory, I Think I Love My Wife, as well as numerous television guest appearances in shows such as Sex and the City, Smash, Law and Order, among others.
