About Handmade Art Book Workshop

Please join us in historic art gallery The incinerator, for a unique cultural arts workshop.

In this ‘Handmade Art Book Workshop’ you will learn how to make a classic leparello (concertina fold) art book, with artisan Meei Yun. A leparello can be used as a journal, art book, photo album or fold out display book for small artworks and photos. The foundational techniques used to construct a leparello can be progressed into making more complex books and book binding methods.

Meei Yun has a long history in historical document restoration and preservation. Through this work she discovered a passion for making and binding her own books, using traditional techniques and hand made, specially sourced papers and materials. Meei Yun is originally from Taiwan, and a beautiful aesthetic is reflected in the choice of materials and finished product.

The workshop price includes all materials for a leparello book, take home instructions, and a delicious afternoon tea that includes traditional Taiwanese sweets.

This workshop is a part of a series in the Connected Cultures-Empowered Communities (CC-EC) Project run by North Melbourne Language & Learning. The CC-EC Project aims to provide intercultural exchange and learning opportunities. Workshop facilitators are local community members who are supported through a series of training and mentoring programs to confidently deliver a workshop that showcases their traditional arts, and places value on their unique cultural knowledge and skills, thus supporting skills development and employment pathways.
