Have you ever wondered why red and green scream ‘festive’, or how the Christmas-mad Victorians dressed for the season?

What about the origin of the infamous Christmas sweater?

This illustrated talk, which will include examples of original antique garments, considers the role that Christmas has played in fashion past and present.

Fashion historian Dr Lydia Edwards, author of How to Read a Dress (2017) and headline speaker at this year’s Perth Writer’s Festival, will delve into hundreds of years of sartorial history to uncover why and how Christmas remains such a prominent inspiration, and beyond this, how fashion has embraced ‘the holiday season’ from the nineteenth century onwards. Light refreshments including mince pies will be provided.
