About HIGH GROUND
HIGH GROUND - Starlight Screening
Rated M
Stephen Maxwell Johnson’s long-awaited follow-up to Yolngu Boy is the most powerful and engrossing Australian film of the year.
It takes an unflinching look at the brutal facts of white settlement, facts that we are still coming to terms with.
A massacre of Aboriginal people in Arnhem Land in 1919 leaves deeply damaged survivors: Baywara, a warrior consumed with anger and intent on revenge; Travis, a white man with an uneasy conscience and no way out, and Gutjuk, the boy caught between two cultures.
This is a film with all the breathtaking beauty and savage ugliness of this country. It is rich in dramatic tension driven by taut, understated performances by newcomer Jacob Junior Nayinggul, Simon Baker, and Jack Thompson in his best role for many years. “urgent and stinging” (Variety)
DIRECTED by Stephen Johnson
STARRING Jacob Junior Nayinggulm, Simon Baker, Jack Thompson, Aaron Pedersen, Ryan Corr and Witiyana Marika.
In English, Rirratjingu and Gunwinggu with English subtitles
TICKETING TERMS & CONDITIONS:
Refunds and exchanges will not be made for inadvertently booking the wrong session, inability to attend or if patrons choose to leave the venue prior to the end of the screening. Bangalow Film Festival's outdoor sessions may be adversely affected by weather. We try to go ahead with screenings wherever possible, and do not cancel for light/intermittent/potential rain. We strongly recommend customers bring wet weather gear to screenings in case of rain (note the use of umbrellas during screenings is not permitted as it obstructs the view of other audience members). Screenings will be cancelled only if the weather poses a safety threat to patrons and staff. The decision to cancel a screening is made by the Festival Manager on site, and can be made at any time up to or during the screening. Patrons accept the risk that weather they consider unsatisfactory may occur on a screening night and acknowledge that tickets will not be re-validated unless a screening is officially cancelled by Bangalow Film Festival.
