ERIC & ROBYN AND THE MYTHICAL BEASTS is a surprising and often hilarious love story about two genuine characters of the Art world, who work in a non-traditional way, creating artworks that are primitive and engaging with a disquieting naivete.
Robyn is a fearless short-stature woman. At 4’2” she takes on the caprice of humankind with zest and zeal. She also happens to be a respected portrait artist, winning awards and finalling in national portrait competitions. Robyn’s deep-thinking sculptor husband Eric plays musical instruments in every corner and roams the hills spouting poetry. He is forever by Robyn’s side, as she battles to overcome serious injury.
Together they create art using a unique process where repeated swapping of the work between themselves means that neither artist is in control. Complete drawings rise up from the pages, crammed full of wonderful Mythical Beasts, nudes, more nudes and contortionists (often nude). War, violence and religious rituals are twisted into artistic absurdity. To get their work into the Archibald would be life changing and so they surge towards that goal, creating a self-portrait surrounded by the creatures of their imagination.
The film is joyful, gutsy, and touching, a quirky telling of two people who rise above everything life throws at them and never, ever give up.
