About Walk to the Waterhole

Caroline Hills Winery has a natural waterhole on their property. Owners, Terry and Helen, want to share this unique spot and have scheduled a ‘Walk to the Waterhole’ (400 metres) through a walkway of native trees and shrubs  that they have planted. On the walk, hear from Helen about the plantings that they have introduced to the property.

The walk will be followed by a sumptuous picnic lunch and a beer, glass of wine, mocktail, tea or soft drink at the bush hut at the waterhole. The hut, firepit and very swish composting toilet have views over the countryside to Mount Gambier and  to the Fibonacci spiral of 800 she-oaks that were planted last year on the hillside to the East of the hut. A talk by winemaker and geographer Terry, describing the underground aquifer, sinkholes, caves and waterholes that form the geography of the region will be part of the event, and provide an insight into the fascinating characteristics of the Limestone Coast.

Terry and Helen have a long history of regenerative action as they have transformed bare paddocks into vineyards, gardens and native vegetation corridors and wind breaks. The gardens and native vegetation plantings support habitat which attracts diverse insect and bird life that benefits the vineyards - and makes Caroline Hills a peaceful country oasis.

Additional wines, garden produce and art/craft will be available for purchase on return to the Cellar Door before transport back to base.

Participants will be picked up by minibus at 11am and returned by 2.30pm.
