These courses are held variously at the State Library of Western Australia and the upstairs meeting room at Citiplace nearby.


The courses are detailed in the brochure sent by email or (Post) mail to all members of U3A (UWA).

21. ART APPRECIATION

The 2018 lecture series focuses on events and exhibitions in the Art Gallery of WA’s calendar and addresses a very wide range of artworks and art practices including craft and design. The six talks will be richly illustrated with photographic reproductions and will present works from a number of different historical eras.

22. FILM DISCUSSION

Discussion about current films showing in Perth. Members share and compare views on the quality, direction, acting and story line of films which they have seen.  More relevant since Margaret and David have retired from the ABC!

24. QIGONG

Qigong places great emphasis on internal fitness, fitness of the organs, meridians, bones, fascia, breath and spirit. As we age the more we build our internal fitness the more vital we become. For 14 years I have been a student, and more recently, a teacher of this amazing practice. The best Donation I could want from the U3A, is that you attend my classes and find joy and good health benefits from them!!

27. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY DISCUSSION   
The continuing discussion about the recent trends in Science & Technology from a popular perspective - eg: genetics, climate change, mobile phones.  Each session will have a number of pre-prepared discussion items, led by a member of the group, as well as a general discussion on contemporary topics.

28. SHOES - THEIR HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
In this review of the history of footwear in Australia, Cameron Kippen traces from early indigenous beginnings through the Penal Colonies to Australian icons of modern footwear.


History of shoes. No one can be sure when our ancestors first wore shoes or whether these were thongs or shoes. This takes a look at the evidence and comes up with a few surprises in his review of shoe history.

29. WA’S DEVELOPING HISTORY 1850 – 1900 

21 August: The concluding story from the 1850's of the ongoing development of Guildford, its famous places and personalities, including a Dead End Story.



18 September: How the population was shifting to the outer areas of Perth such as Gosnells, Kalamunda, Wanneroo, and the stories of some of the founding settlers, the effects of the arrival of the convicts and how the law was applied by its most outstanding advocate in Perth.


16 October: Part 1 of the most historic buildings in the Perth CBD, including some early layouts of the township, Perth's oldest surviving church and Perth's most remembered Bishop and the most famous enduring Perth architect.


20 November: Part 2 of the exploration of Perth's most historic buildings, the story behind Government House, the Perth Town Hall, including the two Perth cathedrals.

7 August - Paraguay–the Country with a Feminine Touch Jorg Imberger


A very poor country with few beggars on the streets, a public politeness and a very warm reception all hiding a totally different form of government. The country has been administered by women for over 100 years, as the Brazilians executed all males, during the Great War, 150 years ago. Not only were the political leaders women, but every position of leadership, from school teachers, to doctors, to supervisors of any kind, have been women until about the 1950’s.

A true life story of won freedom from drug addiction. Jade’s personal story is a lesson to all who are tempted by drug taking. Who better to tell us about this than a reformed drug addict?


4 September - Travels in Iran Alison Fox

"Iran? But is it safe? Friends and family were concerned about Alison and Bruce's choice of holiday destination. But flying into Tehran and travelling almost 3,000km around the Islamic Republic, they had the chance to form their own opinions about life there and many surprises awaited them. Alison speaks of their experiences in Iran and shares some of their photographs.

From her very humble beginnings in Australia, Eileen Joyce rose to become an internationally famous concert pianist, loved and admired by audiences everywhere. Why, then, did she concoct a completely false account of her early years? 



16 October - The threats to safety in 2018 Kerran Campbell

The threats to our safety and security that we are all facing today, have increased recently in both magnitude and sophistication.


This talk will cover a range of topics, including those that have arisen and/or changed since Feb 2017. These include Criminal activity, Terrorist style threats, Personal threats and threats via the Internet. If we understand the threats, we can take some action to mitigate the impact on our lives.

Songs that everyone will know, together an interesting commentary.


20 November - Travelling with a Travel Manager
 Alison Parker

Alison will discuss and highlight the traps and pitfalls of not Travelling with a Travel Manager. Hints and tips for planning a great trip.
