About Things Felt

Things Felt captures Geelong through the texture of its urban landscape and materiality. The installation intention is to to experience Geelong’s locality from a new perspective through colour, texture and touch. The installation aims to initiate a conversation about location as a physical and emotional experience.

Things Felt is comprised of fabric suspended over a cast-plaster floor. These textural casts are taken from urban surfaces around Geelong, such as brick walls, alleyways, and boardwalks. The colour palette is based on photographs of the area and connects to the hues on the printed fabric, these abstract prints will be created with linocuts and are a response to the textural casts.

Things Felt is intended to be interactive. Viewers are invited to walk, stand, sit and even lie down on the work, all while barefoot, to encourage a physical and emotional connection with it. Tangere, the collective proposing the exhibition, believes in the power of touch to connect at an emotional level. To them, belonging stems from a close relationship and connection to one’s environment and surroundings, or Place. The work invites the audience to consider their own response to texture, and its role in connecting us bodily and spiritually to place.
