Whilst Mollie and Giles Ralston await the arrival of their guests booked into their newly opened guest house, the radio news tells them the details of a woman's murder in London. As a snowstorm intensifies outside, a sinister mood settles over the occupants of the house and a telephone call from the local police advising Mollie that a Detective Sergeant Trotter is to call does nothing to ease tensions. His arrival and explanation of the connection between the London murder and Monkswell Manor sets in motion a cascade of revelations, accusations and suspicions as each member of the household is confronted with truths from their past. A second murder leads to unbearable tension before the final twist reveals the truth.
