About February: Steve Lennox & The Keepers / The Cherry Pickers
Steve Lennox & The Keepers - ‘In the Lighter Dark’
Winner of the 2018 Judith Crossley Songwriting Competition, Steve Lennox's evocative storytelling is infused with prose, hooky rhythms and striking melodies. With traces of Conor Oberst, Calexico and the finger picking fragility of Iron and Wine at his most poignant. The disarmingly warm timbre of his voice provides a constant thread throughout. His influences are vast and drive his songwriting with an energy that appears in his charismatically joyous live performances.
Steve has shared the bill with artists such as Archie Roach, Neil Murray and Paul Kelly. He has also worked with the Slingsby Theatre Company in the Ruby Award winning Man Covets Bird and has been a pivotal member of the Americana outfit, The Heggarties.
In The Lighter Dark is Steve's latest work. An album of songs inspired by the lighthouse keeping heritage of his family. Created in collaboration with the conflagrant Jen Lush, In The Lighter Dark explores lives lived at the edge of the world. Stories of joy and loss, of awe and isolation, freedom, intimacy, danger and grandeur. Steve and his band The Keepers (Jen Lush, Paul Angas, Mark Seddon, Paul Cooper, Greg Blanch and Paul Gooding) launched the album in 2020 and will be sending these tales out into the Show Hall for an evening of Stone Pony wonder on Saturday, February 13th.
The Cherry Pickers
The Cherry Pickers are a progressive acoustic/bluegrass band. The band first emerged in 2003 and have been regulars at festivals around the country and overseas ever since. Building on their deep knowledge of, and admiration for, the work of the genre’s founders, they make music that is entirely relevant to the here and now. With a complete bluegrass band line up of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, dobro, upright bass and banjo, they create sounds and textures that stir emotions as well as keep the foot tapping. Special bonds, both musical and personal, are formed when a band plays together for nearly two decades. These shine through in every performance and are obvious in the energy they create.
Their latest critically acclaimed recording “Hand Picked” uncovers hidden bluegrass in songs you know and love, however their much anticipated next recording of originals, due for release in 2021, is their current focus. Having multiple song writers, each with their own styles makes for a diverse and refreshing bluegrass experience.
