About Writing in the Sand
The story of Yothu Yindi is not just the story of one of Australia’s most revered and influential rock bands; it is also a tale of a movement and of how music gave voice to Aboriginal Australia’s hard-fought struggle for recognition. Yothu Yindi changed Australian rock music forever, but they also changed the hearts and minds of people around the country.
In this special panel discussion, founding Yothu Yindi band member Witiyana Marika, Yothu Yindi dancer Mangatjay Yunupingu, and band manager, Alan James, join journalist and author of Yothu Yindi’s authorised biography, Matt Garrick, for an inspiring discussion about the band beginnings and ongoing influence.
This discussion will be followed by a musical performance featuring Witiyana Marika, Mangatjay Yunupingu, esteemed Yidaki player Malŋay Yunupingu and Francis Diatschenko on guitar.
