Farka Touré is fast becoming as respected a Malian blues guitarist as his departed father Ali.”
 - The Independent

One of Africa's pre-eminent axe-man, Vieux is the 35-year-old son of the legendary West African guitar master Ali Farka Touré. And like his father’s music, Vieux’s sound is deeply steeped in traditional Malian music – which has been shown to be the fore-runner of American blues. But it’s also music from a contemporary Africa – urban, sophisticated, globally connected, but deeply proud of its ancient heritage.

This is the old/new Africa that Vieux represents, it’s the music of an Africa that rocks, and yet still hears the camel’s tread in the sand. It is this unique combination of stunning guitar virtuosity and North Malian traditional roots that have prompted many critics and fans alike to dub Vieux “The Hendrix of the Sahara”.

But Vieux’s career would never have happened if his illustrious parent had his way. Born in Niafunke Mali in 1981, in his teens Vieux declared that he also wanted to be a musician, but Ali felt that the music business was a harsh place to work and preferred that his son enlist in the army. But young Vieux, destined for the stage, honed his skills on the guitar in secret and eventually found a mentor in one of his father’s closest friends, the kora maestro Toumani Diabate. His own talents eventually convinced the elder Farka Touré that a second generation of music prowess was inevitable. Already very ill with cancer, father and son finally recorded a couple of tracks together on what would become Vieux’s self-titled debut album. Ali Farke Touré passed away in 2006.

Following the release of a remix album UFOs Over Bamako in 2008 and multiple world tours, Vieux released his second studio album Fondo in 2009, which climbed to the top echelon of Billboard’s World Music Chart. His 2010 album LIVE solidified his global reputation, and was followed by 2011’s The Secret, which featured guitarists Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks and John Scofield.

A chance airport meeting with Israeli songwriter-keyboardist Idan Raichel was the beginning of a fruitful musical collaboration that has seen the duo record two albums as the Touré-Raichel Collective - The Tel Aviv Session (2012) and The Paris Session (2014). Another collaboration, this time with American experimental singer Julia Easterlin led to the 2015 release Touristes. Vieux’s own latest solo effort is his acclaimed 2013 album Mon Pays (My Country).

Having played at most major festivals and venues around the world, we are thrilled to be presenting Vieux Farke Touré’s trio in Bellingen!

Opening the night will be the Coffs Harbour-based band The Brothers, which brings together seven young men from refugee backgrounds who come from the Congo, Eritrea and Kenya.
