About WJSES:

WJSES covers the Cities of Wanneroo and Joondalup. We help about 350,000 people and are available 24 hours a day to assist the community.

We have about 60 members volunteering their time, training across all areas, some of us specialise in certain areas. We have volunteers from many walks of life, ages range from 18 to 70+, from Uni students to engineers, teachers to sales assistants, stay at home parents to retirees!

Our role within the community includes:

- Providing assistance when natural disasters hit by performing temporary building repairs to structures that are damaged via strong winds, rain, hail, floods and fallen trees.
- Assisting the WA Police to search for missing persons and forensic evidence.
- Conducting above ground searches as part of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), which is a specialist search to rescue casualties trapped by buildings, landfalls or slippages which collapse as a result of industrial accidents, explosions, natural disasters and terrorist activity.
- Safely rescuing people trapped at heights or depths in often hostile environments. This includes high rise buildings, cliff faces, crevices, and caves. This is a specialist skill called Vertical Rescue and has specialist courses run to provide training in this area.
- Assisting the Bushfire Brigades in the form of ground support. We help transport relief crews and equipment, fill the role of scribes, and welfare runs.
- We also assist the Urban Firefighters with ‘Car versus House’. We temporarily make the structure safe so the vehicle can be removed.

While the SES is funded by the government through the Emergency Services Levy, it only pays for the essentials. This is great, but there are a number of items we would like that would make our lives easier and better able to serve the community.

For example (including but not limited to)
- upgrades to our building,
- our community engagement and bike team trailers and equipment are unit initiatives therefore not recognised by the funding,
- administration items like website costs and ipads for our vehicles, and
- volunteer recognition program.

We train every Wednesday night and attend callouts whenever they occur 24/7. While we are happy to participate in this organisation and help our community in times of need, it can come at a cost. Our personal costs include:

- Petrol usage to get to and from the unit.
- Equipment like torches and pocket knives.
- Being away from our families and work.
- Some of our roles can be psychologically taxing, for example finding missing people deceased or helping injured causalities.
