“Children of a Genocide” film launch. The first Australian-produced film covering the Armenian Genocide, featuring testimony of survivors who settled in Australia and interviews with their direct descendants.
1.5 million perished in the Armenian Genocide 101 years ago. So long ago, so far away, why should anyone care? Only a third of the Armenian nation survived the genocide, of which 500 reached Australian shores. Sacrifice, allegiance, and faith anchor them to their ancestral heritage, as revealed through 40 archival interviews with these new Australians. Today, these survivors are no longer with us but their archived testimonies continue to tell their story. In a contemporary challenge, the filmmaker–a grandchild now safe in idyllic Australia–searches for meaning and identity amongst a melange of disparate cultures. With eight descendant families, they reveal the brooding of intergenerational memories as they fight the echoing after-effects of genocide a century later. They struggle to retain their ancient culture from the invisible scourge of assimilation–known as the white genocide–in the "lucky country" of Australia.
Food & drinks are available within the Events Cinema complex and surrounding eateries, including popcorn and choc-tops!
