About THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED with LIVE SCORE

THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED with LIVE SCORE
Rated G

The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a 1926 German animated fairytale film directed by the groundbreaking animator Lotte Reiniger. It is the world's oldest surviving animated feature film and, in this wonderful event, this landmark silent film will be screened with an original score composed and played live by American-Australian jazz composer Phillip Johnston.

A handsome prince rides a flying horse to faraway lands and embarks on magical adventures, which include befriending a witch, meeting Aladdin, battling demons and falling in love with a princess.

This cinematic gem will be accompanied by an original score by the acclaimed composer Phillip Johnston. The Guardian writes about the combination: ”While Johnston and Reiniger’s compositions are each complex in their own ways, they come together simply and beautifully, stripping animation back to its abstract qualities of light, shadow, image and sound.”

Johnston’s band features some of the most well-known names of Sydney’s jazz scene: his saxophone is accompanied by James Greening on the trombone and Alister Spence and Casey Golden on electric keyboards.

A perfect afternoon screening for kids of all ages, animation and music lovers, and the young at heart.
