About Notable 20th Century Architecture: Geelong CBD Guided Tour

Come with us on a walking tour to discover many gems of Geelong’s 20th Century architecture. They lend character and variety to the streetscapes in Australia's UNESCO City of Design. Walkers will meet in the heritage-listed Johnstone Park at the Hitchcock Memorial Rotunda, a 1916 Beaux Arts design by Percy Everett (1888-1967).

From the park they view The Gordon's complex of buildings, many also designed by Everett. He was the first architect trained at The Gordon, later becoming the State Government Architect – you can see his work all over Victoria.

Significant public buildings are next on the route - the Brutalist State Offices, the former Court House and the former Telephone Exchange.

Along Ryrie, Moorabool and Malop Streets, some frontages and upper storeys reveal the City’s best period commercial streetscapes showing Federation, Edwardian, and Renaissance Revival to Art Deco styles.

Banks, insurance companies and shopkeepers, confident in Geelong’s future, commissioned substantial buildings between 1900 and 1980. They were responding to its growing industries, regional significance, population, and prosperity during the 20th Century.

While many of these buildings survive some may be under threat. Catch them while you can. Tour will take approx 2 hours, commencing from the Johnstone Park Rotunda.

There are four walks available, all starting at 9.45am for 10:00am – 12:00pm
