About Under the Lights – Two Play Readings
Sit back and let talented local actors bring to life scenes from works for performance penned by two stellar female playwrights. Sarah Reuben’s play, This Jew Sits, dissects what it means to be alive while staring death straight in the face. Following a young woman as she sits ‘Shemira’ with her deceased grandmother’s body, this darkly humorous script explores family expectations, religious piety, and the desire to spend your life in one big party with naturalism and honesty. Wittenoom is the latest work in development by award-winning playwright Mary Anne Butler. Shifting between the past in the asbestos contaminated and now degazetted town of Wittenoom in Western Australia and the present, this moving play explores personal, collective and environmental injustice and loss, capturing, in vividly poetic language, the texture of ordinary lives cut tragically short. Afterwards, Mary Anne and Sarah discuss the inspiration behind their work and the process of writing for performance with CEO of Brown's Mart, Sophia Hall.
